5 signs a process is ready to automate

Most business owners know there is something to automate. They just don't know what. So I turn it around: which process is ready to automate, and which one isn't.
Five signs below. Tick more than one and that process is a strong candidate.

1. It repeats often
Work that comes back several times a week, in the same shape. That's the first condition. If something only happens a few times a month, leave it alone. The gain sits in repetition.
2. The steps are the same every time
A process everyone does their own way is not one to automate. Then you lock the chaos in place and only make it faster.
It doesn't have to be perfect, it has to be consistent: one clear route, one owner. You sort that out first, automation comes after.
3. You visibly lose time to manual work
Think of retyping data between systems, emails, follow-up and admin. If you can point at where the hours go, you have the clearest signal there is.
4. Follow-up keeps slipping
Leads and quotes that fall through the cracks because it depends on someone's memory. Slow or weak follow-up costs you revenue straight away. That's exactly where automation works hardest.
5. Your data is scattered
Loose spreadsheets, systems that don't talk to each other, information in five places. That's the sign a process is asking for structure.

Important: never automate a broken process
Software on top of a messy process only makes the problem faster. Clean up first, then automate.
And start with one process, beginning to end. Not five half-finished. High impact, low complexity first. One well-chosen automation is often live within 2 to 4 weeks and keeps saving you time every month after that.
Checklist: how to tell whether your process is ready
A process is a strong candidate if you tick more than one:
- Happens several times a week
- Goes through the same steps every time
- Costs noticeable time in manual work
- Runs on data you already have somewhere
- Has a clear owner
